Samail is a city located
in Al-Dakhaliah province. It is a large city surrounded by mountains, this series of mountains are known as the
Al-Hajar Mountains. Samail has a total of 55 villages and it is about 60 KM away from Muscat.
According to the Omani census in 2010, there are approximately 60,000 people
living in Samail. Samail is considered as one of the biggest cities in Oman and
that played a central role historically to make Samail among the important
cities in Oman’s history alongside with Muscat, Sohar, Sur, Nizwa and Salalah.
It was the first city in Oman that has embraced Islam. Samail has more 115 small-to-medium sized castles and one huge main fort known as “Samail Fort”. There are also
AlShahba Fort and Bait AlSaroug. Besides, that there are over 300 masjids and the most
important masjid to talk about is “Masjid Bin Ghoduoba” as it is one of the
most ancient masjids in the Islamic history. Samail also has more than 200 Falajs and
Falaj AlSamdi is the longest falaj in Oman and Middle East. A falaj is an old
irrigation system, very popular in Oman. Furthermore, Samail has the longest valley (wadi) in Oman
which is “Wadi Samail”.
